Dear UCI Students, We hope that your winter quarter is off to a great start. We know the winter quarter is often times the hardest with the after holiday burn out, fast pace of the winter months, colder weather, and all the other life demands that hit us. Often times our relationships with our family, friends, and significant others can experience difficulties due to time constraints, balancing demands, or having unhealthy components. In this month's Directors Corner we want to remind you the importance of having a health relationship with yourself. We often times feel pressured to focus on our outward relationships that we forget to focus on the most important relationship which is with ourselves. Having a healthy relationship with yourself will allow you to have healthy relationships with others! Here are a few helpful tips on how to engage in self-LOVE this February! 1. Honor and love yourself. Think about what makes you happy and JUST DO IT! 2. Put yourself first. Somtimes it is good to be a little healthy selfish. 3. Take care of yourself. Engage in self-care behaviors regularly. 4. Set boundaries and maintain them. 5. Select the right people to interact with. Remember your vibe attracts your tribe! 6. Do all it takes to be you. Live authentically. 7. Acknowledge your imperfections! They are a part of who you are. Frances Diaz- UCI Counseling Center Director Mind Your ZOT! How to Improve Negative Body Image Are you struggling with negative body image? In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week that occurs Feb. 24th- March 1st here are 7 tips that will help you improve negative body image. Take time to become aware–without judgment–of the body diversity in shape, size, and appearances around you. We all are one-of-a-kind human beings and deserve respect for our differences. Question societal and cultural standards of “the perfect body” before accepting and pursuing them. Be mindful of the costs caused by trying to match appearance ideals, and their impact on your everyday life. Imagine what photographs of celebrities in fashion magazines and people in social media look like before they are technologically enhanced. Understand that people of all sizes can address health directly by adopting healthy behaviors. Research shows having certain body shape, size and appearance is not necessarily make people healthier or happier. Reach out to people who appreciate you as a whole person without judging your body to build your own community. Acknowledge and appreciate everything that your body does each day to help you live your life, rather than simply criticize your body aesthetically. Think of how you would respond to a friend who was self-critical of their body and exercise compassionate self-talk accordingly.
